The "Energie-Forschungszentrum Niedersachsen" (Energy Research Centre of Niedersachsen) located in the German Lower-Saxon city of Goslar, or in its short version the "EFZN", is a scientific institution of the "Technische Universität Clausthal" (in short the "TU Clausthal" or in English the "Clausthal University of Technology") in cooperation with the Universities of Braunschweig, Göttingen, Hannover and Oldenburg. Its focus lies on issues pertaining to the entire energy-generation and energy-utilisation chain from the raw-material source to disposal. An average of 80 researchers from the fields of natural science, engineering science, law as well as the social and economic sciences works together under the same roof, thus facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to energy research. In accordance with the Statutes of the EFZN, the cooperation partners of the research association agree that in the medium term, the EFZN is to be turned into a Joint Institution of the universities involved.

In the German federal state of Niedersachsen, energy research is done in many institutions with the aim of reducing the dependency on finite fossil energy carriers and of developing solutions that result in a sustainable use of energy. The issues pertaining to energy generation and energy refinement as well as to the disposal of waste products of energy generation are growing ever more comprehensive and complex and can be solved only by way of cooperation between various scientific disciplines. So far, however, there is still a lack of focusing that concentrates on the entire energy chain and that uses an approach to problem finding and problem solving which takes into account the mutual dependencies in a transdisciplinary way. The EFZN with its long-term concept is intended to close this gap.
