Energy Research in Lower Saxony

Energy State Lower Saxony! The transformation of the fossil energy system to a future sustainable system offers Lower Saxony great potential to unlock significant growth and development opportunities. Approximately 4.800 companies with over 50.000 employees are already working in the field of renewable energies in Lower Saxony today. Accordingly, the topic of energy is also of great significance in the area of research in Lower Saxony. At numerous university and non-university locations state-of-the-art research is conducted in the area of energy.

However, the research activities are rather fragmented in the flatland of Lower Saxony. In order to bring together the potential of energy research in Lower Saxony in an interdisciplinary manner the state government established the Energy Research Centre of Lower Saxony (EFZN) in 2007. As a central research, networking and communication platform it bundles energy research competences of the university locations of Braunschweig, Clausthal, Göttingen, Hannover and Oldenburg from the fields of natural and engineering sciences, as well as from the legal, social and economic sciences. In addition, the state government pursues the aim of increasing the visibility of the overall energy research of Lower Saxony through the EFZN at national and international level and of establishing a network among the stakeholders in energy reform from the fields of science, business, politics and civil society in the state.
